Let’s talk ‘Candidates’ within recruitment you will meet hundreds/thousands of candidates. We wanted to talk about - the idea that "there is no such thing as a bad candidate" this often arises from the belief that everyone has potential, and sometimes the right fit for a role or situation just requires understanding, alignment, and growth opportunities. Honesty is key, the role a candidate applied for may not be for them but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t correct for another available role. Here are some reasons why this perspective might exist:

 

  1. Everyone Has Strengths:

    Every person brings unique skills, experiences, and qualities to the table. Even if someone isn't a perfect match for a specific role or opportunity, they might have other strengths that could be valuable in the right context. Listening and taking on board the candidates skill set is a must.


  2. Growth Potential:

    People are capable of learning and improving over time. A candidate who may not seem ideal for a role right away could develop and adapt with the right support and training.   3. Circumstantial Factors: A candidate’s perceived shortcomings might not necessarily reflect their true capabilities. Personal circumstances, biases, or external factors like nerves during an interview can lead to misjudgements. What might initially seem like a "bad candidate" could be a result of those external pressures rather than their actual potential. Thinking about the idea of trial shifts, or a more casual approach to an interview could, in the long run be beneficial.


  4. Perspective on "Bad":

Sometimes, what one person sees as a flaw or weakness in a candidate might be viewed differently by someone else. A more flexible or open-minded perspective can often find value in individuals who others might overlook.

 

Ultimately, it’s important to recognise that hiring or evaluating people isn't always about perfection; it’s about finding the right fit, which can come in many forms.
